Wow that is one of the things you forget about then suddenly you see it and go "WOW I remember that!" What? does that make me old... I'm not old... I refuse to be old... *sighs audibly*

It was always the whole number of the day thing...I think it was actually just a really bored animator

the message they seem to be teaching through a whimsical pinball machine animation and counting sequence is the numbers 1-12, probably as a precursor to helping kids figure out how to read clocks and tell time (this is just my old Educational Psych. classes coming to the forefront).  The animation and speed/slickness of the pinball animation would probably be to capture the attention of a short attention spanned youngster for at least a couple minutes.
