Gift reminder
« on: June 28, 2007, 08:59:24 AM »
A few of you are approaching Adren level.

Few things.  I require scenes for all Intermediate + gifts, all out of B/T/A gifts, and anything out of RAtH.

Adren  and Elder Rank receive a free Intermediate/advanced gift.  Its a random gift based off a system used by the ST team.

I wonder if that is allowed if it takes someone over the 8 xp a month. I know Jenn did it in Cap Rage back as you made certain ranks when I first played there and other games complained about it. I ask this, and cite this example, as I am about to start a game here in jax, fl. and would like to do this myself, but wondered if the org would frown on it.

There is no conflict with the OWbN By-Laws, as long as the "free gift" doesn't charge XP.  The OWbN limit is 8 XP per month earned, but this doesn't have an effect on "discounted" or "free" items.  As long as things don't start showing up on people's sheets mysteriously, and it is handled on an equal basis for all players in this situation across the board, then I don't think there is a problem with it.

OK I understand what you are saying ,but it doesn't really make sense. I mean if a player earns his 8 xp, then gets a free intermediate gift in the same month, that is the same as getting 14 xp that motnh, just done in a round about way. I personally am for it, as I think it should be a reward for making the rank and the spirits confirming it in game, but it is what is in regards to the xp mechanics... I just don't want to start it and then be told I have to end it...

It's only about XP if you think of it in terms of XP.  ST's can add items to characters sheets without charging them, as plot devices or as a result of something happening IC.  Best bet may be to ask a few ST's and see what a few different games think before you decide what you want to do.

As many things in this org both statements are technically true.

But all one needs to do is look at thaumaturgy for example or any other primay path discipline which awards a ritual with the learning.

Bob the tremere has 1 exp banked last month and earns 8 this month cuse well its OWBN and every vamp earns 8. So he he now has 9 exp. he then proceedes to buy the last advanced dot of his primay path, path of OMGTREMEREWIN for this he gets a free advanced ritual.

Advanced rituals are 6 exp. Therefore in that one month he has had a total of 15 points added to his sheet.

By that basis all blood magic users in the org get 2/2/4/4/6 free exp for a total of 18 exp, 3 more then a free int and free advanced gift(15)

If no one minds if I throw in my two cents. (Well maybe more)

All arguments sounds great from all sides. In the end, I do not see it as a problem with the one free gift at Adren and Elder.

To throw a monkey wrench into Dan's example, which was well made.

Garou can learn rites as long as they are readily avaliable at no cost of experience.
Think of the math with all the Garou who learn rites and compare that to experience.

It is not worth arguing over because it is not always that game balance breaking (within reason, I am not saying that a cliath ragabash should get access to the rite of the silver lake with ease.... or at all.)

Two further points can be made here:

1. Rites are not free in tabletop; you have to make a roll (or an extended roll) in order to learn them. In LARP it only costs time.

2. A free Gift for Adren and Elder is appropriate given that rank difference means a lot less mechanically in LARP than in tabletop. Trait differences are minimal, Gifts that are tied to rank in tabletop are not in LARP, for example.

These were all excellent points, thanks for sharing. As I said I personally like it myself, it seems fittin gthat you get something to signify the importance of the achievement, and if it is not abused it is cool. I just would hate to see it abused also. From what I remember from playing Stalks out in the midwest where I created him, and the vamp I played there, I can see how it can get abused too...

Hey Dave,

Nothing stops ST's from adding anything they want to any character sheet.
Completely in the rules.  XP is what a player can spend on the character.
What the ST spends on the character is not considered XP.

I have been completely known to add things to people's sheets because it helps me torture them much easier.
