So to make sure I understand.  I want to hit bob the spirit. I declare physical challenge we chop I win. Bon can retest essence I can cancel brawl? Bob is now bidding 2 less? One for losing and one for retest?  Does bob still use essence to power his charms as well?

Anna: Yes, in your example, Bob would lose 2 Essence (1 for losing and 1 for the retest), plus however much damage your attack dealt. Bob also uses Essence to activate Charms that require Essence, like Blast. Some Charms use other stuff or are free (like Umbraquake, for some reason, which is absurd).

ok so bascially nearly everything we do whittles down Bob's essence.  good to know!  thanks.

oh so... spirit ward   that goes up to -6 and would also decrease the traits bob bids yes?
