Not that I'm eyeing a gift or anything, but...
« on: February 06, 2010, 01:31:28 PM »
How does weather work in the Umbra? Is it one-to-one, so if it's raining in the Realm it's raining there? Or like most things is it slow to change, so it will be vaguely gloomy during rain showers and will only start raining during a long storm, or does it go a step further and reflect the type of weather that a time period should have or usually has? Or something else entirely?

Having asked this, one-to-one seems by far the simplest for adjudication purposes, though somewhat less interesting than the other possibilities.

So, after looking at the section on the Penumbra in the Umbra sourcebook, I found that what was represented in the Penumbra really comes down to one factor, importance.  Things that have a spiritual reflection, or any reflection at all, need to be important or significant to the area.

In the context of the weather, if it say, snows in Boston in winter, it is unlikely to have as large an impact on the Penumbra, since snow at that time of year is an expected thing, and not as important to area.  On the other hand, 2 feet of snow in Virginia would be a very big deal and important, and probably reflected in the Penumbra.  In a general sense, I could see representations for the general weather for a season or natural disaster, but not day to day weather.

All of this is, of course, subject to ST ruling.

Actually, I might say that in a place that snows sufficiently, the Penumbra might be snowy and cold all season, a la Narnia under the Witch.

Expect it to be similar to the Realm (other than the night/day switch).

Big weather events, or 'unseasonal' events will of course be reflected in the Penumbra, along with the accompanying types of related spirits.

So a 1 to 1, then? Snow in the Realm = snow in the Umbra and vice versa?

More like 1 to 3/4, the other 1/4 being whatever the ST decides he or she wants the Penumbral weather to be like.
